What is this course?

This course the various aspects of the emerging field known as Islam and Science. It will cover key important discussions that impact Muslims’ beliefs in relation to scientific developments. These will include the relationship between science and religion, laws of nature, miracles, big bang, design arguments, and evolution.

The course will introduce you to the emergence of Islam and science, and the Islamisation of the sciences. It will take you through scientific miracles in the Qur’an, developments in the history of science, laws of nature, evolution and its challenges, randomness and God’s providence.

Science has made significant impacts on religious traditions with Islam being no different. This course will help present those interfaces with clarity along with ways of addressing those concerns.

Who is it for?

Anyone with an interest in Islamic theology and science, no prerequisites required.

Dates and times

The course will be online and the first two sessions will be at 6pm UK time to 8pm, on the 3rd and 10th of January. After this, a new time may need to be rescheduled to accommodate Dr Malik's teaching timetable. Students will be consulted and recordings will be available.

About Dr. Shoaib Ahmed Malik

Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences Zayed University, Dubai
Dr. Shoaib is formally trained as a chemical engineer and is an assistant professor at Zayed University in Dubai where he teaches the natural sciences (mainly physics and chemistry). He also has had some alimiyya training and is currently doing an MSc in philosophy of science and religion. He has also received a fellowship from Cambridge Muslim College on science and religion, which commenced in 2019. His research is specifically on Islam and Science, New Atheism, and Philosophical Theology. Shoaib is also an author of a recently published monograph entitled Atheism and Islam: A Contemporary Discourse.
