Muslims make up 1.8 billion of the humans on the planet - over a quarter of them are followers of the Hanafi Madhab. Founded by the great Imam of the Salaf, Abu Hanifah, it became the official school of the Abbasids, the Ottomans and the Mughals, and contained many of the greatest minds the Muslims ever produced. The Hanafi School still plays a gigantic role in multiple avenues of Islam today, including Islamic Finance and the fact that Muslim in India, Pakistan, Turkey and the Balkans all follow it.
So many Muslims are Hanafi, but what does it actually mean to be a Hanafi?
Join us as we host one of the greatest Hanafi scholars alive today, as he speaks about the oldest, most popular and arguably most dynamic school of Islamic Law in Islamic history.
Speaker Biography:
Dr Salah Abul Hajj was born in Amman, Jordan. He initially began his studies in Jordan before moving to Iraq complete postgraduate studies in Islamic Law. He completed his PhD in Iraq, where he also studied with many of the country's leading scholars, including: Shaykh Bakr al-Mawṣili, Shaykh Qasim al-Ṭa’ī, Shaykh Sajid Abdul Qadir, Shaykh Mawlud al-Turki, Shaykh Muhammad Ramaḍan al-Kurdi and Shaykh Abdul-Malik al-Saʿdi.
He is currently the Dean of the Hanafi Fiqh College at the World Islamic Sciences and Education University in Jordan and the founder of the Anwar al-Ulama Centre from where he teaches many of his lessons and also shares research articles and answers online.
His writings and teachings carry great traction in the Muslim world and he has published many books on Hanafi Fiqh that are treasured by scholars globally. His West-based students include: Shaykh Dr Sohail Hanif, Shaykh Siddiq Mitha, Shaykh Faraz Khan, Shaykh Salman Younas and Shaykh Dr Sulayman van Ael.

Shaykh Dr Sulayman van Ael - Dr. Wim Sulayman Van Ael embraced Islam in 1994 and traveled to the desert of Sudan to memorize the Quran. He since travelled around the world in pursuit of traditional and Academic knowledge. He has a bachelor in theology, pr Master in Mental care and PhD in Islamic studies and a degree in: Neuropsychology, CBT and CBT based mindfulness.He is a master in the ten recitations, and was previously lecturer Islamic sciences at: Rotterdam I. University and Erasumus. He is a practicing psychotherapist and founder of www.muslimmentalhealth.uk He was a student advisor and teacher at: LSE, Imperial College and Soas. He has been included in the 500 Most influential Muslims in the world since 2017 in the category of spiritual guides.
